Oxygen crisis

  • The Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) crisis during the second wave of Covid surge has been precipitated by a shortage of tankers and the daunting logistics of transportation from distant locations. It makes the situation complex.
  • Companies are lacking in use of Cryogenic Tankers & black marketing of oxygen cylinders also in practice.

  • LMO or Liquid Medical Oxygen is suitable for human body.
  • It is also a part of the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines.
  • India has the Daily Production Capacity of approx. 7100 MT which also includes industrial use.
  • The domestic Production in April 2021 will cross 9250 MT per day.
  • CSIR has developed OEU(oxygen enrichment unit) which will help reduce dependency on Oxygen cylinders & Ventilators.
